From the Austrian Alps to the creative voices of Omani filmmakers, cinema is taking centre stage in Muscat as the third edition of the European Union Film Festival brings stories, cultures and perspectives together on the big screen.
The festival opened on Sunday, October 11, at Cinépolis, Oman Avenues Mall, launching a week-long programme that celebrates European cinema while creating space for cultural exchange and local filmmaking talent. It runs until October 18.
Organised by the European Union Delegation and the embassies of EU member states in Muscat, in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, the Oman Film Society and the International Film Foundation of Oman, this year’s festival features films from Austria, Cyprus, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Romania and Spain.
The opening screening, A Whole Life, set the tone for the festival with a deeply human story rooted in the dramatic landscapes of the Austrian Alps. Based on the acclaimed novel by Austrian writer Robert Seethaler, the film explores hardship, solitude, love and loss, finding meaning and dignity in the seemingly ordinary course of a life.
Addressing guests before the screening, Austrian Ambassador to Oman Christophe Ceska welcomed audiences and acknowledged the European and Omani institutions, participating embassies, sponsors and supporters whose contributions helped bring the festival to life.
His Excellency also remarked that this year’s programme is largely special as it introduces a short film competition, giving Omani filmmakers a platform to share their creative work with a wider audience and showcase the range of stories being told locally.
Nine films have been selected as finalists: Wahan, The Last Fall, Rope, A Story of Hope, Spirit Whispers, The Call, Sarapukhal, Forbidden Flowers, Iguita and The Surge. The films are being screened from October 12 to 14, between 5pm and 8pm.
The competition will recognise achievements in Best Film, Best Director and Best Storyline, alongside an Audience Award. Winners will be announced at the closing ceremony on October 18, celebrating the filmmakers’ work and encouraging further creative exchange between Oman and Europe.
Across the festival, audiences can discover a varied programme spanning genres, themes and age groups, including films suitable for children and families. Arabic and English subtitles will accompany the screenings, allowing more viewers to engage with the stories on screen. Tickets cost RO1.500 per screening.
More than a showcase of films, the festival offers a meeting point for filmmakers, diplomats, students, media professionals and cinema enthusiasts. Through stories that cross borders and reflect shared human experiences, it seeks to bring audiences closer to cultures beyond their own while strengthening cultural ties between Oman and Europe.
The festival concludes on October 18, with the closing ceremony scheduled for 7pm at Cinépolis, Oman Avenues Mall, where the short film competition winners will be honoured.
